The motion detector is a multipurpose redstone output. You can use it to trigger automatic doors, traps, lights, just about anything. There are two different types of MotionDetector: one created with wood that triggers when any living creature is nearby, and one created with more stone that only triggers when the player is nearby. You can change the range of the MotionDetector by right clicking it.

If you’re having problems please reinstall ModLoader. Then make sure you deleted META-INF from minecraft.jar. If that doesn’t work, and you’re sure you reinstalled modloader just now, it could be a blockID or itemID conflict. These mods will automatically create a file in (minecraft folder)modsDJoslin, open that file and change the ID to an unused one.
